In order for students to actively engage in service learning activities in their home universities a basic training programme is recommended, using the IO toolkit and the IO1 web-tool. The summer school serves as an opportunity for exchanging experiences among the students and fostering European cooperation.
60 students from partner universities will take part. Project partners will be the trainers.
The Sessions will be the following (but are subject to title change in the course of the project):
SESSION 1) Learning about community life, civic engagement and community needs (IO1) including a practical ICT-session how to use the web-tool (IO1)
SESSION 2) Session on service learning methodologies (IO2)
SESSION 3) Presentation session of experiences and good practice examples of students
SESSION 4) Practical planning session (IO3) and introduction to the student blog
etc.
The training will last for 5 days in Porto, PT having as trainers experts from the partner HEIs. Each partner HEI will bring 10 students (=60 in total) that will be selected from the cohorts enrolled for the courses taught by teachers selected to implement service learning projects within their topics.
The assessment of the learning outcomes of the training activity will consists in the assessment of an essay submitted by the trainees in the last day of the activity.
A certificate of attendance with the logo of the University of Porto will be distributed on the last day of the training (on condition that students attend at least 80% of the total hours of the training). The certificate will be free of charge.
On the first day of the training each participant will receive a welcome package (a pencil, a folder, sheets, handouts etc.).
The training can be accredited with ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) distributed as follows: 30 h course = 3 ECTS. Each sending university from Romania, Austria, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania and Portugal has to decide on this policy matter.
